The Five States of Change

Life is change. Even in a place of eternity, where the end is not the end, it is still so. Each day when you rest your head upon your pillow, you will not be the same as when you awoke that morning. This is true of us, and of nature as well. For all things are arranged in an endless state of dynamism that is never ceasing, ever changing. The character and state of these elemental forces is arranged thusly: Wood-- growth, rising, development, expansion. Fire-- energy, action, inspiration, ambition. Earth-- transformation, conversion, change. Metal-- sinking, contracting, declining. Water-- contemplation, consideration, serenity. We are many things before we become like water, and then from serenity, we learn how we must grow to achieve our full potential.
